The Life of a Student- From Class One to PHD in Engineering by Man Gurung

This Short interview has been take of Mr Dil Kumar Gurung who is the son of Som Man Singh Gurung and Gau Maya Gurung from Chipleti in Gorkha. The interview focusses on his journey and experiences from a humble student in Gorkha leading up to his achievement in Philosophy of Doctorate (PHD) in engineering. It is a well known fact that education is absolutely essential to everyone for their intellectual development. Therefore it is evident that without proper education there isn't much we can do apart from taking menial works. On the other hadnot, those who have education will normally be able to apply for better jobs and achieve their lifetime ambition. Hence education will normally be able to apply for better jbos and achieve their lifetime ambition. Hence education plays a vital role in our lives.

Dil Kumar commenced his schooling in Chipleti School in Gorkha. He is unable to recall the full name of the school (Shree Jana Jyoti School ) as he left school at the tender age of six having completed class 2. He along with his brother sanjaya left the village and to join the SOS Children's Village School in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur. He started the school from class one and studied up to grade twelve. He was the first batch of higher secondary student(10+2) to have passed from SOS Hermann Gmeiner School.

Having completed grade twelve, he was admitted in the Kathmandu University to study Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. He successfully completed this with Merit gaining GPA 3.04 in 2003. He attained Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2008 achieving GPA 3.68 from Texas Tech University and began studying Phd in 2009. He is expected to compelte his PhD in 2012 from the same university studying with same professor.

Getting admission into Texas Tech University is not easy as students have to meet the high strict point requirements of the university. This posed no problem for Dil Kumar due to assistance provided by his friend. Although Dil Kumar is in full scholarship, he still has to pay for his tution fee. He earns doing research for which he is paid monthly and htis just about meets his tution fees.

The differences he has found between Kathmandu University, where he completed his Bachelor Degree and the current Texas Tech University where he completed his Master Degree(ME) and is currently studying for his Doctorate in PHD is that the former sees to focus on theoritical matters whilst the later seems to focus on practical things. Before proceeding to study in the States, Dil Kumar worked in Nepal as a Mechanical Engineering for one and a half years in Microtech, New Baneshowr. He found it frustrating due to the constant political instability in Nepal.
After completing his PHD, Dil Kumar aims to return back to Nepal to help the people and the communities. He wishes to meet everyone and catch up on lost times.
we wish Dil all the best of luck in his study and look forward to meeting him in the not too distant future.
